EDM (definitions)

EDM (definitions)

This page presents the classes defined in EDM and the properties that may be associated with them.

EDM comprises two principal profiles:

  • External – the set of basic EDM classes and properties to be applied by data providers.

  • Internal – the profile of EDM as published by Europeana following the ingestion and processing of data.

These abbreviations are used throughout this specification to indicate the profile in which a given class or property is employed.

In addition, EDM includes specialised profiles developed for particular applications, which are available here.

Datatypes

The datatype for properties used by EDM are represented in this page as follows:

Type

Description

Type

Description

Literal

A string value with an optional language tag (i.e. represented in RDF/XML using the xml:lang attribute with an IETF BCP 47 language tag)

Literal (Datatype)

A value that conforms to a particular data type (e.g. a floating point)

Reference

A reference to another resource using a unique identifier for that resource (i.e. a URI).

Reference (Class)

A reference to another resource of a specific class using a unique identifier for that resource (i.e. a URI).

Core classes in EDM

edm:ProvidedCHO

Label

Provided Cultural Heritage Object

Definition

Represents the cultural heritage objects that Europeana collects descriptions about.

Usage

EDM enables the integration of data from multiple providers describing the same real-world resource, while maintaining explicit provenance for each data source. EDM extends the Object Re-use and Exchange (ORE) model by adopting its proxy mechanism, which allows distinct provider-specific descriptions to coexist without loss of attribution. In this architecture, edm:ProvidedCHO functions as the central aggregation node, serving as the reference point for the resource and mediating its multiple contextual instantiations via proxies.
The use of edm:ProvidedCHO differs between data providers and aggregators (including Europeana). Data providers typically attach descriptive statements about the cultural heritage object (CHO) directly to the edm:ProvidedCHO. Aggregators, by contrast, rely primarily on the proxy mechanism to ensure that attribution to the original data source is preserved. In the internal representation of EDM at Europeana (EDM Internal), the edm:ProvidedCHO is restricted to a few properties (see below). In the external representation (EDM External), however, all properties applicable to ore:Proxy may also be asserted on edm:ProvidedCHO.

Example

Mona Lisa, Winged Victory of Samothrace

In EDM External, all properties defined by EDM for ore:Proxy may also be applied to edm:ProvidedCHO.

ore:Proxy (Provider and Europeana Proxies)

Label

Proxy

Definition

“A Proxy represents an Aggregated Resource as it exists in a specific Aggregation.” (https://www.openarchives.org/ore/1.0/vocabulary#proxy)

Usage

Proxies allow distinct provider-specific descriptions of cultural heritage objects to coexist without loss of attribution. This mechanism is particularly important because Europeana and aggregators may add their own assertions about a cultural heritage object, which must be clearly distinguished from the original statements supplied by the data provider (see Section 6.1 Introducing Proxies in the EDM Primer).

In EDM Internal, the proxy containing assertions made by Europeana can be identified by the property edm:europeanaProxy with the value "true". Additional differences between provider proxies and Europeana proxies include:

  • A provider proxy includes edm:type, whereas a Europeana proxy does not.

  • A Europeana proxy includes edm:year, whereas a provider proxy does not.

Profiles

Internal

Property Range Card. Usage Profiles dcterms:alternative Literal 0..* An alternative name for the resource. This can be any form of the title that is used as a substitute or an alternative to the formal title of the resource including abbreviations or translations of the title. External, Internal dc:contributor Literal or Reference (edm:Agent) 0..* An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource. External, Internal dcterms:conformsTo Literal or Reference 0..* An established standard to which the described resource conforms. External, Internal

dc:format Literal or Reference 0..* The file format, physical medium or dimensions of the resource. External, Internal dcterms:hasFormat Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that is substantially the same as the pre-existing described resource, but in another format. External, Internal edm:hasMet Reference 0..* edm:hasMet relates a resource with the objects or phenomena that have happened to or have happened together with the resource under consideration. We can abstractly think of history and the present as a series of “meetings” between people and other things in space-time. Therefore we name this relationship as the things the object “has met” in the course of its existence. These meetings are events in the proper sense, in which other people and things participate in any role. External, Internal dcterms:hasPart Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that is included either physically or logically in the described resource. External, Internal edm:hasType Literal or Reference 0..* This property relates a resource with the concepts it belongs to in a suitable type system such as MIME or any thesaurus that captures categories of objects in a given field (e.g., the “Objects” facet in Getty’s Art and Architecture Thesaurus). It does not capture aboutness. External, Internal dcterms:hasVersion Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that is a version, edition, or adaptation of the described resource. Changes in version imply substantive changes in content rather than differences in format. External, Internal edm:incorporates Reference 0..* This property captures the use of some resource to add value to another resource. Such resources may be nested, such as performing a theater play text, and then recording the performance, or creating an artful edition of a collection of poems or just aggregating various poems in an anthology. External, Internal edm:isDerivativeOf Reference 0..* This property captures a narrower notion of derivation than edm:isSimilarTo, in the sense that it relates a resource to another one, obtained by reworking, reducing, expanding, parts or the whole contents of the former, and possibly adding some minor parts. External, Internal dc:identifier Literal 0..* An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context. External, Internal dcterms:isFormatOf Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that is substantially the same as the described resource, but in another format. External, Internal edm:isNextInSequence Reference 0..* Relates two resources S and R that are ordered parts of the same resource A, and such that S comes immediately after R in the order created by their being parts of A. External, Internal dcterms:isPartOf Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource in which the described resource is physically or logically included. External, Internal dcterms:isReferencedBy Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that references, cites, or otherwise points to the described resource. External, Internal dcterms:isReplacedBy Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that supplants, displaces, or supersedes the described resource. External, Internal dcterms:isRequiredBy Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that requires the described resource to support its function, delivery or coherence. External, Internal dcterms:issued Literal or Reference (edm:TimeSpan) 0..* Date of formal issuance (e.g., publication) of the resource. External, Internal dcterms:isVersionOf Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource of which the described resource is a version, edition, or adaptation. Changes in version imply substantive changes in content rather than differences in format. External, Internal edm:isRelatedTo Literal or Reference 0..* The most general contextual property defined in EDM. Contextual properties have typically to do either with the things that have happened to or together with the object under consideration, or what the object refers to by its shape, form or features in a figural or encoded form. External, Internal edm:isRepresentationOf Reference 0..1 This property associates a resource to another resource that it represents. External, Internal edm:isSimilarTo Reference 0..* The most generic derivation property, covering also the case of questionable derivation. Is Similar To asserts that parts of the contents of one resource exhibit common features with respect to ideas, shapes, structures, colors, words, plots, topics with the contents of the related resource. External, Internal edm:isSuccessorOf Reference 0..* This property captures the relation between the continuation of a resource and that resource. This applies to a story, a serial, a journal etc. No content of the successor resource is identical or has a similar form with that of the precursor. The similarity is only in the context, subjects and figures of a plot. Successors typically form part of a common whole – such as a trilogy, a journal, etc. External, Internal dc:language Literal 0..* A language of the resource. External, Internal

ore:lineage

Reference (ore:Proxy)

0..*

Indicates that a proxy originated or was sourced from another proxy. It allows the distinction between data provider’s original metadata from aggregator-enriched metadata, by keeping track of the provenance of the proxies.

Internal

dcterms:medium Literal or Reference 0..* The material or physical carrier of the resource. External, Internal dcterms:provenance Literal or Reference 0..* A statement of any changes in ownership and custody of the resource since its creation that are significant for its authenticity, integrity and interpretation. This may include a description of any changes successive custodians made to the resource. External, Internal ore:proxyFor Reference 1..1 Proxy objects are used to represent a resource as it is aggregated in a particular aggregation. The ore:proxyFor relationship is used to link the proxy to the aggregated resource it is a proxy for. The subject of the relationship is a proxy object, and the object of the relationship is the aggregated resource. External, Internal ore:proxyIn Reference (ore:Aggregation) 1..* Proxy objects must also link to the aggregation in which the resource being proxied is aggregated. The ore:proxyIn relationship is used for this purpose. The subject of the relationship is a proxy object, and the object of the relationship is the aggregation External, Internal dc:publisher Literal or Reference 0..* An entity responsible for making the resource available. Examples of a publisher include a person, an organisation and a service. External, Internal dcterms:references Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that is referenced, cited, or otherwise pointed to by the described resource. External, Internal dcterms:replaces Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that is supplanted, displaced, or superseded by the described resource. External, Internal dcterms:requires Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that is required by the described resource to support its function, delivery or coherence. External, Internal edm:realizes Reference 0..* This property describes a relation between a physical thing and the information resource that is contained in it, visible at it or otherwise carried by it, if applicable. External, Internal dc:relation Literal or Reference 0..* The name or identifier of a related resource, generally used for other related CHOs. The recommended best practice is to identify the resource using a formal identification scheme. External, Internal dc:rights Literal or Reference 0..* Name of the rights holder of the CHO or more general rights information. (Note that the controlled edm:rights property relates to the digital objects and applies to the edm:WebResource and/or edm:Aggregation). External, Internal owl:sameAs Reference 0..* Links an individual to an individual. Such an owl:sameAs statement indicates that two URI references actually refer to the same thing: the individuals have the same "identity". External, Internal dc:source Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource from which the described resource is derived in whole or in part, i.e. the source of the original CHO. External, Internal dcterms:spatial Literal or Reference (edm:Place) 0..* Spatial characteristics of the resource. External, Internal dc:subject Literal or Reference 0..* The topic of the resource. External, Internal dcterms:tableOfContents Literal or Reference 0..* Table Of Contents. A list of subunits of the resource. Type includes terms describing general categories, functions, genres, or aggregation levels for content. External, Internal edm:type Literal 1..1 A broad classification of objects into five material types that users may find useful for filtering purposes. Values are terms from the vocabulary Europeana material type. External, Internal edm:unstored Literal 0..* This property should not be used and is only included here for backward compatibility with ESE. External, Internal edm:year Literal 0..* A point of time associated with an event in the life of the original analog or born digital object. Internal

edm:WebResource

Label

Web Resource

Definition

A digital representation of an Information Resource, such as media files and Web pages, available on the Web via a URL.

Usage

The digital representation(s) of the cultural heritage object. There may be more than one edm:WebResource for each edm:ProvidedCHO, which will be linked via the ore:Aggregation using edm:hasView or one of its subproperties.

The properties listed in this section are used to described the digital representation, not the cultural heritage object itself.

Example

A Web Resource containing a description of an image of the Mona Lisa painting.

Additional uses and properties for this class are defined in the following EDM profiles: Technical, Embed, 3D, IIIF.

Property Range Card. Usage Profiles dcterms:conformsTo Literal or Reference 0..* An established standard to which the web resource conforms. External, Internal dcterms:created Literal or Reference (edm:TimeSpan) 0..* Date of creation of the web resource. External, Internal dc:creator Literal or Reference (edm:Agent) 0..* An entity primarily responsible for making the web resource. This may be a person, organisation or a service. External, Internal dc:description Literal or Reference 0..* An account or description of this web resource. External, Internal dcterms:extent Literal or Reference 0..* The size or duration of the digital resource. External, Internal dc:format Literal or Reference 0..* The file format of the web resource. The use of Internet Media Types [MIME] is highly recommended (http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/). External, Internal dcterms:hasPart Reference 0..* A related resource that is included either physically or logically in the web resource. External, Internal dcterms:isFormatOf Literal or Reference 0..* This property links a web resource to another version of the same content that exists in a different format. Key applications include: Downloadable alternatives: it can be used to link a web resource suitable for online display to an “original” one that is intended primarily for download (such as high-resolution TIFFs or complex 3D models). Alternative presentation formats: it can be used to link two resources that are both suitable for online presentation but exist in different formats (for example, linking an OGG audio file to its MP3 equivalent). External, Internal edm:isNextInSequence Reference 0..* Where one CHO has several web resources, shown by multiple instances of the edm:hasView property on the ore:Aggregation this property can be used to show the sequence of the objects. Each web resource (apart from the first in the sequence) should use this property to give the URI of the preceding resource in the sequence. External, Internal dcterms:isPartOf Reference 0..* A related resource in which the described web resource is physically or logically included. External, Internal dcterms:isReferencedBy Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource that references, cites, or otherwise points to the web resource. edm:isRepresentationOf

Reference (edm:WebResource)

0..*

This property associates a web resource to another web resource that it somehow represents the content of. This is in particular for cases where content has been derived from an original resource to represent a specific aspect of it, for example, a transcription of a video or sound recording can link to the original media.

Internal

dcterms:issued Literal or Reference (edm:TimeSpan) 0..* Date of formal issuance (e.g., publication) of the resource. External, Internal dc:language Literal 0..* A language of the resource. External, Internal edm:preview Reference (edm:WebResource) 0..1 The URL of a thumbnail representing the digital object, generated by Europeana. Internal dc:rights Literal or Reference 0..* Rights information about this web resource. Should be used for information about intellectual property rights or access arrangements that is additional to the controlled value provided in edm:rights. External, Internal edm:rights Reference 0..1 Information about copyright, usage and access rights that apply to this digital representation. The rights statement specified at the level of the web resource will "override" the statement specified at the level of the aggregation. The value in this element is a URI taken from the set of those defined for use in Europeana. A list of these can be found at http://pro.europeana.eu/web/available-rights-statements External, Internal owl:sameAs Reference 0..* A URI of another web representation of the same resource. External, Internal dc:source Literal or Reference 0..* A related resource from which the web resource is derived in whole or in part. External, Internal dcterms:temporal Literal or Reference (edm:TimeSpan) 0..* Temporal characteristics of the resource. External, Internal dc:title Literal 0..* A name given to the web resource. External, Internal dc:type Literal or Reference 0..* The nature or genre of the resource. ore:Aggregation

Label

Aggregation

Definition

“A set of related resources (Aggregated Resources), grouped together such that the set can be treated as a single resource.” (https://www.openarchives.org/ore/1.0/datamodel#Aggregation)

Usage

This class aggregates all resources supplied by a single provider that relate to a given cultural heritage object. These resources collectively represent the object and may include thumbnails, other forms of abstractions, and descriptive metadata. Instances of ore:Aggregation are connected to the cultural heritage object they represent through the property edm:aggregatedCHO.

Profiles

Property Range Card. Usage Profiles dc:rights Literal or Reference 0..* Information about rights held in and over the resource. External, Internal dcterms:created Literal 0..1 Date of creation of the resource. External, Internal dcterms:modified Literal 0..1 The latest date on which the resource was changed. External, Internal edm:aggregatedCHO Reference (edm:ProvidedCHO) 1..1 The identifier of the source object e.g. the Mona Lisa itself. This could be a full linked open data URI or an internal identifier. External, Internal edm:dataProvider Literal or Reference (foaf:Organization) 1..1 The name of the data provider of the object (i.e. the organisation providing data to an aggregator). External, Internal edm:hasView Reference 0..* This property associates an aggregation with various and potentially heterogeneous digital representations of a cultural heritage object. These include media files in alternative formats, thumbnails, textual abstracts, or tables of contents, which Europeana uses to support and enhance the resource browsing experience. Usage constraints: edm:hasView is intended for resources suitable for direct online presentation. It should not be used for web resources that cannot be presented or rendered within a browser. For views intended primarily for download (such as high-quality 3D models or alternative archival formats like TIFF), providers should link the alternative format to the related web resource using dcterms:isFormatOf. edm:hasView can be used together with other properties so as to integrate various notions of “view” in content providers' data. All these properties, including the ones used to indicate the preferred views provided to Europeana (edm:isShownBy or edm:isShownAt) should be declared as (direct or indirect) sub-properties of edm:hasView. In such a context, the expected convention is that statements with edm:hasView should point to additional or alternative digital representations, distinct from the “specific views” represented with edm:isShownBy, edm:isShownAt or other sub-properties. External, Internal edm:intermediateProvider Literal or Reference (foaf:Organization) 0..* The name of the intermediate organization that selects, collates, or curates data from a Data Provider that is then aggregated by a Provider from which Europeana aggregates. The Intermediate Provider is distinct from both the Data Provider and the Provider in the data supply chain. External, Internal edm:isShownAt Reference (edm:WebResource) 0..1 The URL to the digital object on the provider’s web site in its full information context. External, Internal edm:isShownBy Reference (edm:WebResource) 0..1 This property contains an active URL that resolves to a representation of the cultural heritage object to be used within the Europeana interface. It should ensure direct access to this representation on the provider's platform; the resource should be suitable for presentation and reasonably independent at the linked location. edm:isShownBy can be used when the URL points to a digital object that includes short copyright information or minimal navigation tools. However, for digital objects presented within HTML page, even those with extremely simple structures, the property edm:isShownAt should be used instead. External, Internal edm:object Reference (edm:WebResource) 0..1 The URL of a representation of the CHO which will be used for generating previews for use in the Europeana portal. This may be the same URL as edm:isShownBy. External, Internal edm:provider Literal or Reference (foaf:Organization) 1..1 The name of the provider of the object (i.e. the organisation providing data directly to Europeana). External, Internal edm:rights Reference 1..1 The rights statement that applies to the digital representation, as given (for example) in edm:object or edm:isShownAt/By, when these resources are not provided with their own edm:rights. A list of these can be found at http://pro.europeana.eu/web/available-rights-statements External, Internal edm:ugc Literal 0..1 Indicates whether the record has been contributed by the user community. It is a mandatory property for objects that are user generated or user created that have been collected by crowdsourcing or project activity. The property is used to identify such content and can only take the value “true” (lower case). External, Internal

edm:EuropeanaAggregation

Label

Europeana Aggregation

Definition

The set of resources related to a single cultural heritage object that collectively represents that object in Europeana. Such set consists of: all descriptions about the object that Europeana collects from (possibly different) providers, including thumbnails and other forms of abstractions, as well as the description of the object Europeana builds.

Usage

This class is used in Europeana to gather in a single conceptual unit all the information about a cultural heritage object, necessary for all operations on these objects. An instance of edm:EuropeanaAggregation is created at ingestion time for each different cultural heritage object recogniseized by Europeana. Such instance is associated to the cultural heritage object that it is about, by the property edm:aggregatedCHO

Profiles

Internal

Property Range Card. Usage Profiles edm:aggregatedCHO Reference (edm:ProvidedCHO) 1..1 The ID of the record corresponding to the CHO of this aggregation Internal ore:aggregates Reference 0..* The ore:aggregates relationship expresses that the object resource is a member of the set of aggregated resources of the subject (the Aggregation). This relationship between the Aggregation and its Aggregated Resources is thus more specific than a simple part/whole relationship, as expressed by dcterms:hasPart for example. skos:Concept

Label

Concept

Definition

A SKOS concept can be viewed as an idea or notion; a unit of thought. However, what constitutes a unit of thought is subjective, and this definition is meant to be suggestive, rather than restrictive. The notion of a SKOS concept is used to refer to specific ideas or meanings established within a knowledge organization system and describe their conceptual structure.

Usage

Concepts are identified by the data provider and named according to some vocabulary or local convention. They may also be identified and normalised by Europeana at enrichment or at ingestion time.

Example

See the SKOS primer for examples of identifying and describing SKOS concepts.
