To inform the public how digital cultural objects published on Europeana can be used, we ask data providers to assign each digital object an accurate and appropriate rights statement from a number of options. This means including valid copyright information in the metadata (before: "..., we ask data providers to include standardised rights statements in the metadata). Rights statements indicate the extent to which copyright exists in the object and communicate conditions and restrictions on reuse.

Rights statements use standardised and user-friendly language and are easy to understand. They have been designed with both human and machine users in mind and allow the public to search and facet on copyright values on Europeana. In this section, we provide information about:
