Europeana and IIIF

In our efforts to enhance user engagement with collections published in Europeana, we are actively developing and adopting technologies that facilitate the reuse and sharing of digital objects. One such technology is the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF), a set of open standards for delivering high-quality, attributed digital objects online at scale. These standards, designed with cultural institutions in mind, enable seamless sharing of media resources and metadata, fostering interoperability across repositories and systems.

IIIF is also an international community developing and implementing the IIIF APIs. IIIF is backed by a consortium of leading cultural institutions, and the Europeana Initiative works to build capacity in cultural heritage professionals to work with the Framework by developing tools and sharing knowledge. For those unfamiliar with IIIF, we invite you to explore our resources on the Data Space website, as well as online training that explains the key concepts related to the IIIF. There is also a working group from the EuropeanaTech community about Europeana and IIIF.
