Purpose: How our users behave when dealing with multilingual content:

  • When landing on an item of language different to the language the user speaks 

  • When using search query in a language that is different from the search result.  

Methodology: One user test shared on the website to get high quantity responses. 

  • Multiple choice questions (MCQ)

  • Design questions (image with MCQS) 

  • Open ended questions  

Users: Diverse users of different persona arriving on the Europeana Collections website.

Survey summary

  • CHI and Teachers come mostly from Spain.

  • Academics from Germany.

  • Students and Designers mainly from the USA.

  • They are all open to see results in different languages.

  • They mostly search by keywords.

  • The primary languages used to search are English and Spanish.

  • French and German are the third and fourth most used languages to search.

  • The UI language picker (top right of the website) and the option to filter results per language are generally never used.
