CTAs, hero section, illustration, and icon guidelines

On Europeana.eu, we use various illustrative elements to:

  • Promote campaigns and projects;

  • Surface high-quality items from the collections on Europeana.eu;

  • Explain and illustrate page content.

to support users' journeys across the portal and to encourage brand familiarity.

Guidelines for applying these illustrative elements:

1. Call-to-action (CTA) banners (e.g. on the home page):

  • Use vector illustrations created specifically for this purpose.

  • Contact design for these, or re-use previously approved illustrations.

2. Highly visual hero sections (e.g. on the home page and various landings pages):

  • On the home page, use high-quality images from the collections on Europeana.eu

  • These images are chosen according to the month’s theme, season, or special event (e.g. Winter images for winter)

  • Contact design for these.

     

  • On landing pages, use vector illustrations created specifically for this purpose.

  • Contact design for these, or re-use previously approved illustrations.

     

3. Illustrations (e.g. on various landing pages)

  • Use vector illustrations created specifically for this purpose.

  • These images are used to illustrate long texts.

  • Contact design for these, or re-use previously approved illustrations.

4. Icons (e.g. on various landing pages)

  • Use vector illustrations created specifically for this purpose.

  • These images are used to illustrate short texts.

  • Contact design for these, or re-use previously approved icons.
